Malkiya

Facing the radiance of the Hermon

And the border of Lebanon

Overlooking the vallies

A kibbutz on the mount we shall build.

Let us sing to tomorrow

From the top of the hill

For of today and days gone by

All has been sung.

This chorus written more than 25 years ago in celebration of the kibbutz’s 30th anniversary (by member Sheffer Shechter) and considered the anthem of Malkiya, still expresses the dream of the original settlers who built their home in Malkiya in March 1949, after the War of Independence, and of those who live there today: “Let us sing to tomorrow”.

Kibbutz Malkiya has changed over the years and today has a new façade. The populace: kibbutz members, “Community Neighborhood” home owners and the residents who rent housing on the kibbutz, all see this as their home, and have the same objective in mind; to turn the settlement that has suffered over the years from economic failure, from a drastic reduction in the population and in the number of young families, resulting in a decline in the number of children – to a flourishing community, teeming with youth and energy that will provide a taste of life for the veteran kibbutz members.

It is difficult to live in close proximity to the Lebanese border and not only due to the security concerns. Life in the northern periphery of Israel, the distance from the cultural centers, from institutes of higher education and from the financial hub of the country is a burden to the residents as a whole and to each individual. The latest war in Lebanon in July 2006, that was fought day and night adjacent to our home, reminded us again and again that Zionism still has meaning and we are here to fulfill this mission; to build a prosperous and flourishing settlement, to maintain a growing close knit community whose spirit and actions, education and culture are for the welfare of the individual and the wellbeing of all.

  • The population of Malkiya today is made up of 460 people; 130 kibbutz members, 100 children, 40 “Community Neighborhood” home owners and 190 residents (rent paying inhabitants).
  • The main source of income of Malkiya is from agriculture: fruit orchards, field crops and livestock. The tourist industry on the kibbutz has also developed over the past few years.
  • The “Community Neighborhood” expansion project which includes 80-100 new family homes, is under construction.
